| FTO Drivers Club - Motorsport Participation |
|
Western Australia has a wide range of options when it comes to motorsport, with much of it very affordable indeed. Perth has 300-odd sunny days a year, a culture of car-worship instilled from birth and an ever-increasing number of good quality motorsport facilities. It's certainly a great place to own a performance vehicle!
The information below will keep track of members' participation in local competitive driving events. Wish us luck!

While this web page provides general team and event details, the FTO Drivers Club Forum Motorsport Section should have all the latest news, schedules, trackside goss and so on. Check it out!

Motor Challenges are motor events designed to test acceleration, braking and general manoeuverability of the vehicle together with the skill and judgement of the driver. They are designed to be low in risk but high in excitement. The most important aspect of a Motor Challenge is to have fun and learn a thing or two abour car control. The atmosphere is very relaxed. To set up the Motor Challenge, markers are set out on a bitumen surface and the cars are required to follow a set course around the markers. The course will be mostly completed in first and second gears. The cars start individually and are timed from start to finish, incurring penalties for any indescretions.
We hadn't fielded a team in the 2005 MC Motorsport competition. However, that's not to say the former Captain Chaos team members didn't get a chance to thrash their FTOs a bit! Leigh was reserve driver for Team JDMYard, along with Andrew and Nick in their Integras. I whored myself out to anyone with an entry form, and ended up driving for Team What The!! and Team Porsche. Here's a summary of our efforts in the Summer Series. Well done to everyone who got out there and gave it a go. - Richard
Round 1 - Sunday February 13 (79 Entrants)
- RICHARD . . . . 35TH PLACE
- LEIGH . . . . . 68TH PLACE
Round 1 was certainly a humbling experience. In a mere 12 months, the level of competition had certainly gone up a knotch (or two). In 2004, we were able to get into the top 25 percent. This time, however, it was a big ask even making the top half. This series is an awesome event to watch, with some quick drivers sporting seriously well set up vehicles!
Round 2 - Sunday March 13 (76 Entrants)
- RICHARD . . . . 42ND PLACE
Round 2 continued the tradition of getting my butt whipped. But it was still great fun!
Round 3 - Sunday April 10 (72 Entrants)
- RICHARD . . . . 22ND PLACE
- LEIGH . . . . . 50TH PLACE
This round felt a lot more settled. Well, for me anyway... Leigh was having all sorts of excitement - he was running competition tyres on the front and street tyres on the rear! Something about only having two correctly sized rims for his r-comps. His car wanted to swap ends every five seconds, but Leigh felt in the mood for a challenge!
Finals - Sunday June 12 (74 Entrants)
- RICHARD . . . . 9TH PLACE
The first wet weather competition round this year, which definitely played to the FTO's strengths. Vehicles with a truckload of torque weren't able to get it to the ground as easily, but that MIVEC engine was a solid performer on comp tyres with some tread depth. It also helped that the FTO gearbox was now sporting an EVO III LSD! Thise made it a very competitive vehicle for the kind of watersports on offer! An awesome result. I'm working on my rain dance for future events! - Richard
Note: The originally published results showed an even better "7th place", but it seems the organiser's spreadsheet calcs were a little dodgy! The amendments showed that two STIs had pipped me by 0.6s. But still in the Top Ten!
